By the way, I generally use WWWJDIC to look up words.

http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/jwb/wwwjdic?1C

For Japanese input, Windows 2000/XP comes with a decent IME. You just have to enable it. Just go into Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages. At this point, if you don't have the box marked "Install Files for East Asian Languages", you'll probably want to check that. It might make you find your windows CD. Anyway, after that, go to Text Services and add Japanese.

After that, you'll get the language bar enabled either in your taskbar or as a floating window. Use Alt-Shift to switch between Japanese and English. When in Japanese mode, there are several modes to choose from. For some reason, my one seems to default to "direct input" which seems the same as English. Switch it to hiragana, and then start typing in romaji. The IME will convert to hiragana. Press space and the IME will convert to kanji for you.

People who use IME's a lot can get really good at them and learn all the little tricks and shortcuts. At some point, you might want a Japanese keyboard that has the henkan/muhenkan and katakana/hiragana keys on it. Without those, it's kind of a pain in the ass to switch IME modes.
