Hello all,

I bought/installed winVista (Premium) today and I gotta say:

I LOVE IT!

It looks so smooth and works very fast, if you have a good computer. Really a tip to buy if you are bored with winXP like I was. I think I am able to say it looks as good as Linux.

Who else here runs it?

This topic will be dedicated to the ratings, findings, remarks on winVista.

Not at this point, old games do not benefit it yet. Older games might not even work without vista-patches from the gamebuilders.
New games will benefit from vista tho, so if you like to play the latest games... go buy it!

Yes, I've got Vista biggrin.gif

I got to say that it does look nicer than XP, and "Explorer" looks very much like Apple's, except not as annoying because it doesn't have that "Frame" thing with Scrollbars that Mac's do

Shadows are pretty nice, but they're too big sometimes, and it doesn't blend well, and the border around the windows is pretty annoying, considering that Mac doesn't have any borders xD

I like some of it's improvements, but there are some annoying things, like when you copy or cut files to move, it takes longer to do so than with any other system :/ bacause it has to "Calculate" stuff, but if you've used KDE on Linux, you know that it displays that kind of info instantaneously.

I dont have it, because for visuals, you can just download free stuff to make it look like Vista. And thats what I do.

I only hear bad stuff about Vista, and really, I dont feel like paying 200 euros for a system that will be dead in 2 years again, when they release a new system...

1) its just 100euros or less for OEM
2) what bad stuff? Most in vista is improvement tongue.gif And of course not everything is supported in Vista YET (drivers, programs, games and stuff) that's not an argument, it was the same with XP back then.
3) XP lasted like 5years until Vista, I don't think another windows will be launched in 2years from now

BTW. Don't get 64bit version... Everything in this generation is still 32bit for workstations, only servers and such benefit from 64bit shit atm. The 64bit version might be superior in theory, but it lacks compatibility.

Programs not working and stuff... you're right, although once everythings fixed, its virusses once again.

But they already have the new name for the next Windows. It's called Vienna and they're already working on it and its slated for 2009, 2 years from now.

That will be pushed back most likely and I wouldnt trust just any source at this time, Microsoft aint stupid... they will still invest in Vista to make it more mainstream by making Service Packs etc. as the software is never finished.

I've only heard about how slow it runs, but that probably because they were running it on inferior computers. Personally, I'm holding out for Vista until I buy a DX10 compatible graphics card, and I doubt that will be anytime soon.

The original XP skins suck, but that's why you download the Royale Theme from XP Media Center. It's pretty hot, for an official skin.

I'm fine with my XP right now.

I just got a brand spankin' new gaming computer with Vista. Custom ordered. Anyway, I LOVE it. Vista is very smooth and my new computer runs faster than any computer before it (that I've had).

So Vista doesn't support games like Starcraft yet? It will EVENTUALLY though, right?

I use vista business premium and it certainly looks nice. But as far as getting work done there really aren't too many benefits. Networking and control panel aren't very intuitive, and IE7 sucks on high resolution. It keeps flickering, probably because of my graphics card. It might one day become the norm but right now, its only good for casual home use. If you're for serious business or serious gaming, Vista kinda sucks.

why in the world would you even use IE tongue.gif

i'm not sure what you mean flickering, but i think you mean the way the fonts are rounded, they are kinda hard to read, which is true

but you can disable that if you want

No its a pretty prominent problem in IE in Vista. Just google IE Flickering and you'll see tons of topics and no solutions. Of course I'm using Firfox with the Mac skin ;P

I will get back my desktop computer next week... mother board blew... and we don't find other MB with socket 754 now, then I changed CPU, RAM, and power supply too (the ancient power wasn't compatible with new mb's...).

The new CPU is a Athlon 64 X2, then I'm attempted to install an OS wich works on 64 bits (I've used XP for 6 years). But I don't like Linux very much.

I like XP a lot, and I know that a 64 bits version exists, but Vista is more... recent (whereas it isn't really a benchmark)...
With Vista, I think there are compatibility problems, and I don't know how is the skin, and if the user can changed it... But Vista ... I would like to try it !

I hesitate... XP 64 bits or Vista (64) ???

I like Vista pretty well. I'm not as used to it as XP, which was a little more automated (Vista is somewhat clicky). It certainly runs a bit smoother, and the applications are more polished, but there are some aspects that XP had that Vista doesn't. It still has a loooooooong way to come.
