@steiner:
so you mean that energy can create creatures and other sorts of life forms???
are you sure????

Energy AND Matter which, as Steiener said, are interchangable. Given the correct conditions and the right amount of time natural processes can create life. It's not COMMON, which is why we havn't found aliens on Mars and Neptune and Mercury etc. But maybe every billion planets or so the right conditions come about for life.

QUOTE(Fox @ Dec 9 2007, 01:48 AM) *

That's if my memory serves anyway. The point is if Aliens left their homeworld today to come and say Hi we'd be unlikely to meet them for another few million years at least.

I think the easiest way communication could arise would be through SETI. They send coded radio waves, which travel at the speed of light as well as analysing any recieved signals.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SETI

I wonder if SETI could be dangerous. Imagine if it causes some malevolent force to notice this planet. It sounds far fetched, but we should still be careful.

Yeah, basically as Fox said, once there is energy and matter stars and planets are created. And on some of those planets, molecules are formed that can replicate themselves, such as DNA and RNA. And from that evolution takes hold and life is born.

Wow. I condensed the history of the earth into a few lines.

where did the rest of the universe come from then because there must have been some role of it otherwise its useless. and what created the two rocks that caused the big bang because they couldnt appear out of nowhere?

well... that was a very interesting debate...
gotta admit we discussed from aliens to the universe to the big bang theory to theory to energy and so on......
indeed it was quite an argument...

I think you misunderstand. There weren't two rocks that caused the Big Bang. All the matter in the Universe basically started spreading out in a sort of explosion. Thats why the distance between galaxies is getting bigger over time as they continue to spread out from the original singularity.

Thats the basic way to look at it.

There's a huge amount of misinformation in this thread...

The Big Bang wasn't an explosion. It was a time period of RAPID expansion in the universe. And when I say rapid, I mean a lot faster than the speed of light.

Think of a baking a loaf of raisin bread. When you first put it in the oven, all the raisins are somewhat close together. But as it bakes, the bread expands, and the raisins all get further apart from each other.

That is our universe; everything is moving away from everything else. Same with the big bang. The space between mass expanded rapidly from everything else, causing the universe to expand very quickly. We see evidence of the big bang from the Cosmic Background radiation. Look it up.

God I love being an Astrophysics major.

Seems like these past answers have belonged in the Constant Expansion thread...aren't we talking about aliens?

I'd like to hear a more thorough explanation of how matter and energy and become life. If it has never been done by humans or observed, than isn't it just another theory (like the Big Bang)? I don't like the whole explanation of "matter congregates, primordeal soup, LIFE!"

We Are Made of Star Stuff. Matter and Energy don't "create" life, per se. But the stars created the basic building blocks of life; evolution did the rest.

^ Haha, I'm not sure if they would look the way they are stereotypically portrayed in films etc, but chances are that they would be primitive life forms.

No, but I'm now saying that you watch too much TV tongue.gif

--

Back to my previous post - the physical attributes and adaptations of the alien life forms would depend on lots of factors, such as how close their planet is to their star, the climate of the planet, the evolutionary pressures inflicted on the life forms etc etc etc.
