The most controversial news currently. Read up if you haven't

Link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7161590.stm

I got pessimistic after I was informed about this news. I think people should prepare to have another year with international economic worries. Bet gas price all over countries is gonna raise again... What do you guys think? Any general opinions or updates are welcome.

I literally just heard about this on the news. It's madness.

I notice that, after the first attempted attack on her life, she risked staying in the country for her people.

As for the econimic effects, things are just going to go sky-high, I think. With the political pressure over there, things are going to go into a frenzy.

(At least, that's how I see it)

When I heard this my first reaction was "WHAT? O_O"

I read a fair bit about her in the news so I was semi-(but not completely)surprised to here it. The thing that sticks out to me is "serious lapse in security" which sounds like a load of bull considering the "other" laspes insecurity regarding her. It's really too bad she died though....

I saw this when I first woke up this morning and I wasn't surprised at all since she has only been back in Pakistan for a couple months at the most and there has already had been at least one serious attempt on her life.

I don't think this will cause gas prices to rise or for their to be any instability on wall street, etc as long as the situation doesn't deteriorate into violence. But, if there is some sort of civil war or sectarian violence between her supporters, Musharref's people, and the jihadists then the gas prices and economic worries will rise up. Of course if such a scenerio were to occur, I would be primarily worried about the location of Pakistan's nuclear weapons.

Sadly, this is just the latest example with what is wrong with many Muslims.

I have not been surprised by this, sadly. She was risking too much considering the circumstances. I don't know how this will come up but this won't help to improve the situation at all

I agree with Joesmith, I really do not think it will have any effect on gas prices etc...but it is a sad situation.

The situation may have the potential to effect the international markets severely if well... people suddenly become contagious, which is the usual scenario. Guess we could only hope for the good.

Yeah, saw this today on the news and newspaper. Very sad, but given the amount of radicals that oppose her in Pakistan, it was only a matter of time until something dangerous happened to her. The country is strife with chaos and instability. As Bhutto remained true to her beliefs about opposing Musharraf's dictatorship and because she has lots of loyal supporters, I think she achieved martyrdom.

It's sad for me seeing such an intelligent person doing such a risk that would impact the world drastically.

My prediction was right.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7162445.stm

Prices ticks. Not to mention, the smell of conflict.

^ You were right, it happened.

And yes, she was an incredibly intelligent woman, having completed her education at Harvard University and Oxford University. She was also the 1st democratically elected female Prime Minister of Pakistan. In terms of due respect and integrity for what she stood for and represented, she is leagues ahead of dictator Pervez Musharraf.

Aye^ I remember the initial attempt on her life and she does deserve martyrdom for still wanting to stay in the country and make a change. I can only hope she has not died in vain. I always find it surreal that a short while ago she was holding interviews and just like that life can be taken sad.gif

Bit late with my reply, but ah well...

I said to my father back in October 'Give it a few months and she'll be assasinated' and litteraly 2 months later i was right...

...allthough maybe assasinated is not the right word.. I heard she actualy dies from hiting her head on the sun roof of the car she was travelling in. This is obviously a lie that their government has made up in an attempt to calm the situation down thou.

By becoming assassinated, Benazir would attain martyrdom for what she stood for. So, the Pakistani government tried to convince everyone (with no evidence whatsoever) that she hit her head and died accidentally. Dying accidentally would remove martyrdom from Benazir, and this would work out better for the Musharraf government, who will be enduring elections in the not too distant future.

Its quite pathetic by the government, really. They even silenced doctors who tried to save Benazir at a hospital, by taking away all medical records and blackmailing the doctors into not speaking about what happened.
