have you heard the theory that the universe is endless?by area i mean,do you think thats true?the other theory is that if you keep going in a straight line, you will end up back in the same place that you will have started at?do you think that ones true?

The area of the Universe isn't endless. At least, that's what scientists have concluded.

The straight line thing is interesting. It is possible to be travelling in a straight line in the third dimension but to be travelling in a circle in another dimension (time). So it is possible, but I dont really know. The idea is called space time curvature, although I think that the curvature isnt enough to go around in a full circle (from what I remember).

Imagine travelling in a straight line on the second dimension while travelling in a circle on the third. Thats what could be happening with the Universe, except for shifted up by a dimension.

Isn't this also known as the Pac-man theory?

But you know that theory could actually be conceivably true. Because it is possible to travel in a straight line in the third dimension while going round full circle in the fourth dimension.

My theory is that the universe is vast, but has a physical end. I think it would be like a giant mirror. That's based on the idea that everything needs a medium, and that if space is "the final medium", then light can't travel past it's edge, and would bounce back biggrin.gif

Haha, you mean the tenth dimension?

Actually, I thought the video was pretty good (my physics teacher showed it to me, and he did Physics at Cambridge, so its can't be complete crap). I know that its obviously not proven that 10 or 11 dimensions exist since there is no evidence for it, but there is something logically appealing about it. Care to elaborate upon why its bullshit?

Oh, and I havnt actually read the book they were advertising on that site.

Because it's armchair philosophy. It's the type of thing that the author came up with sitting around and thinking about pseudoscience/philosophy without any actualy mathematics or physical sciences to back it up.

I'll give him this much though, his explanation for a 4th dimension that we can't perceive is alright.

^ The above reminds me of in a Year 10 Physics lesson a lass said "Surely if you clapped your hands enough times the atoms would all miss each other and your hands would go through each others.

I can't remember the teachers exact response but I do remember him shuddering before answering, declaring whoever told her that a pedantic idiot and some other claim about Physics not being the realm of fantasy. smile.gif

tidus1 sorta has a point,i heard a qoute that go's with that:

The universe as we know it probably won't last forever. But we can't destroy matter. In some form, it will go on forever.

Please base your ideas on actual physics, not backwards logic.

Aren't there exceptions to the law of conservation of matter? How did matter get here in the first place?
